Travel-Friendly Hobby Ideas

Traveling by RV is a great way to explore and experience the world around you. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that “life is a journey, not a destination” and RV travelers know this just as well as anybody. RV travel certainly has its exciting moments and not-so-exciting moments but these together are what make up the journey. If you’re feeling bored with the not-so-exciting times in your RV, it may be time to find a hobby that you can bring on the road with you!

Hobbies for the Active Traveler

Are you the type of person who has a tough time sitting still no matter what you're up to? Do you find that you would almost always rather be outside? If so, consider finding a hobby that allows you to get up and move! Here are some ideas…

Yoga & Meditation

After a long day of driving or riding as a passenger in an RV, the last thing you’ll likely want to do when you finally reach your destination is exercise. However, a nice stretch would probably feel pretty good! Yoga is a great way to unwind and decompress after a long trip. Adding some meditation into your yoga routine can also help you to destress and forget about how missing that exit added an extra 45 minutes to your trip. Yoga requires no prior skills, just an intention to be present and pay attention to how you’re feeling. My favorite yoga teacher always says to “find what feels good” and that’s really what yoga is all about. If you’re not sure how to get started or want an easy-to-follow guide, check out Yoga With Adrienne on YouTube.

Cooking

Food brings people together and what better way to make friends at the RV park than by cooking up a delicious meal. While it’s tough to beat a hot dog cooked over the campfire, outdoor cooking has come a long way, and being in an RV allows you to take full advantage of the available options. Learning to cook can be rewarding and doing it in your RV just makes it that much more fun! If you’re looking for an outdoor cooking option that will really get you excited about making food, check out this Blackstone Griddle which is great on the go!

Photography

Thanks to advances in phone cameras, anyone can become an amateur photographer nowadays! Traveling in your RV will provide you with many photo opportunities; like a unique rest stop, a beautiful sunset, or a car park with a stunning view. If you’ll be camping in one spot for a while, photography is a great way to familiarize yourself with the area that you’ll be staying in. Capturing travel memories is great for reminiscing and learning a few basic photography skills is a fun way to enhance those memories. Your phone camera is a great way to get started without a large investment. If you decide you love it, you can always get more serious about your gear acquisition.

Creative Hobbies to Keep You Busy

Creativity comes in many different forms so finding a hobby that allows you to comfortably express yourself will take some experimenting but don’t let that stop you from trying! Use your RV travels as your artistic inspiration and let the creativity flow from there. Finding (or creating) a spot in or outside of your RV with a sturdy, flat work surface can be very helpful for art projects. If your table is looking rough in your RV, check out RecPro’s selection of RV tables to restore your workspace.

Sketching & Drawing

I know this one is intimidating for many of us out there who never got past the stick figure drawing phase, but hear me out! Drawing allows us to think in a different way and gain new perspectives, even if the final product isn’t very pretty to look at. All you need is a pad of paper and a pencil, and this goes for whether you’re a beginner or an expert. There are lots of resources available for ideas of what to draw and how to draw. If the last time you tried drawing something was in the 2nd grade, maybe it’s time to give it another go. You may surprise yourself!

Origami

Origami, which refers to paper folding crafts, can keep you entertained for hours! Origami is popular with people of all ages because it is easy to do, requires very few supplies, and results in a definitive final product. If you are interested in trying your hand at origami, keep in mind that most designs and instructions are based on a square piece of paper. Online resources are easily accessible to follow along until you get a better idea of what you’re doing. Origami crafts are great little gifts for friends you meet along the way of your travels.

Knitting/Crochet

Making something with your hands is personally rewarding and is something that everyone should experience at some point. Knitting and crochet are regaining popularity as relaxing ways to create something in your free time. Knitting uses a pair of long needles to form stitches, while crochet uses a single hook. Both are easy enough to learn, but it’s easiest to start one at a time. Supplies are minimal so you can easily bring your knitting or crochet bag with you on your travels. They even have knitting/crochet clubs at some RV resorts!

Writing & Journaling

A traveler’s journal can be a great tool to reflect on your journey as it is happening and give you something to look back on when you are reminiscing about it later. If this doesn’t seem enough to keep you busy, you could always try your hand at creative writing. Prompts are available online to get you started and as is with drawing, all you need is a pad of paper and a pencil to begin. If you carry a computer with you on your travels, you can use that too!

Do you enjoy any of these hobbies on the list, at home or traveling? Are there any hobbies not on here that you recommend RV travelers try? Share with us in the comment section down below!
