The forebear of the modern key and lock system began, simultaneously, in ancient Egypt, Babylon, and China. The first examples were wooden devices that operated by activating small pins with a sort-of wooden toothbrush. The Romans improved on the design later, realizing that wooden locks could easily be bypassed by brute force, fire, saws, and axes, so bronze and iron were brought into the construction mix in both the locks and the keys. The skeleton key was born out of this and for seventeen centuries after, though the technology had changed slightly with better locking mechanisms, the key stayed relatively the same.

The heavy-duty iron skeleton key was the "go-to" performer in key technology up until the 1940s when advancements in technology, conserving metals for war efforts, and streamlining to cheaper materials created keys that were lighter, slimmer, and created for locks that were harder to bypass. The world went from keys that would last for centuries to smaller highly stylized metal strips that can wear down and lose their functionality or become lost.
