UNIQUE SOLUTIONS, QUALITY PRODUCT, AND EPI INTEGRITY
The Elkhart Plastics story beings in 1988 with the founding of the company that is located in the RV capital of the world, Elkhart, Indiana. EPI’s inception was a culmination of ideas that led to the creation of a plastics company that could provide industry-best options while maintaining static price points, excellent quality, and top-tier service levels. The founders saw a gap in the industry and they were determined to fill it, with quality plastic. Today the company is helmed by Jack Welter, who has maintained his position with the company for almost 30 years as CEO, and continues to lead EPI solidly into the coming years of business.
When the company began, EPI started by providing the OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) in the recreational vehicle industry with high-quality water (fresh and gray) and holding (black) tanks. Their products were considered to be some of the best in the market. This attention to product detail and quality turned into a company that now supplies more that 30 different industries across a variety of market platforms. Yearly EPI manufactures more than 250,000 units of marine-based furniture, 250,000 recreational vehicle tank products, and almost 200,000 diesel and DEF tanks that are products of their Rotomolding process. All feature the storied EPI levels of product design and engineering, mold-making, manufacturing, secondary assembly, and storage & shipping.
Maintaining a deep connection to the RV and marine industries, Elkhart Plastic Inc’s expansion maintained a foothold in the Midwest by holding three concerns of five in Indiana alone (the others existing in the states of Washington and Colorado.) By keeping such close proximity to the heart of manufacturing located in the Midwest (particularly the recreational vehicle and marine industries) EPI is able to maintain close shipping services, communication, and relationships with major manufacturers and distributors. These relationships also help EPI to keep their finger on the pulse of the industry so that they can maintain a presence at the front of technology shifts in plastic molding, production, and new product creation.
For thirty years Elkhart Plastics, Inc. has been a major provider of rotational molded products for companies all over the U.S. Their hands-on capabilities with this specific type of process allows them to have an open engineering platform that their customers can treat as an alchemist’s creation lab. If you have an idea, EPI excels at creating unique solutions for you. Their creation and design team understand that application drives design. Problems to you, aren’t problems to Elkhart Plastics, Inc. They’re challenges. Challenges that lead to opportunities that eventually lead to solutions. Elkhart Plastics, Inc. takes pride in their work, product, and customer service. Their stalwart adherence to quality in rotational molding (Rotomolding) processes have produced a quality product that has quickly become the industry standard for excellence.
Rotomolding is the cornerstone process involved in many of EPI’s manufacturing models. Rotomolding is a many-tiered procedure that takes great attention to detail and process technique. This manufacturing technology was first utilized in the 1950s and has been tweaked over the decades until it was finally perfected and enhanced to allow for larger molds and many different types of materials for various specific applications. EPI uses the most advanced rotation molding equipment in the industry. By employing an independent arm carousel, they can produce custom plastic parts in an endless variety of shapes and thickness. Here is Rotomolding at a glance:
Step 1: Load the mold
Empty or hollow molds are filled with the desired resin material and loaded onto a large device called a spider.
Step 2: Heat the mold
The molds are then rotated slowly in a large oven, allowing the material to be dispersed and softened until it is forced out onto the mold surface to form the desired product.
Step 3: Cool the mold
After the material has been heated, it continues to spin on the spider through a cooling process, which helps to harden and set the plastic material.
Step 4: Unload the mold
Once the part has been properly cooled, operators at Elkhart Plastics facilities unload the mold. Depending on the product, the part will then move on to secondary assembly operations or the quality lab.
Elkhart Plastics, Inc. has a long history in the Rotomolding and plastics manufacturing world. Over 30 years of experience of trial and error coupled with victory and copious amounts of success, have led to an ability to create any unique part that is presented to them. Their strength is in their service and their production methods.
