Sleep is a crucial component of living. There are numerous, scientifically supported, studies that extol the importance of getting plenty of rest. If you don’t get a good night’s sleep, your whole day could be impacted. Whether it’s your mood being soured, or your back having a kink in it that affects every move you make, bad sleep can adversely impact everything in your life. This is especially true when you’re out on the road. There are many stressors that come with living the RV lifestyle. Set-up, tear-down, camping, hiking, driving (sometimes ten hours or more on the road), lifting, hauling…everything about this “relaxing” lifestyle has a large amount of work attached. We understand this at RecPro and we’re here to help with our new line of ergonomic and eco-friendly mattresses.

When it comes to your mattress, all of the components matter. Everything put into the construction of the mattress builds toward the total comfort and sleep profile of your resting surface. If one portion of the mattress is neglected in the areas of quality and construction, the overall product will suffer. If the product is suffering (or lacking) then you, in turn, and your loved one, will be suffering too.
With standard uncomfortable factory-provided mattresses, you will have almost the same build across the board regardless if you're dealing with a hide-a-bed or your main sleeping quarters mattress. The standard is a 5" to 8" mattress with internal foam fill and coiled (or "S" curved) wire supports. What this means is that every time you put pressure on these mattresses, they break down. Unfortunately, they break down on multiple levels. The internal foam core, which is an old outmoded yellow foam fill, has very little bounce back, stability, or density. This foam is primarily for giving a mattress (or cushion/pillow) body. It's meant to fill-out, not support. Once you put pressure on it, it begins to break down. When you add metal coils pressing back in the opposite direction for "support", you get a further breakdown of the soft core. There is diminishing return each and every time you sit or lie, down and it continues to get exponentially worse over time. How? We'll tell you.
Memory Foam
The internal spring matrix of standard mattresses that comes with the regularly applied sleep system from a factory is made of a thinly poured (or extruded and formed) steel wire. The gauges are manufactured to be smaller (reduced diameter) so that the mattresses will not only be lightweight but are also able to fold up and be stored inside of a hide-a-bed or tri-fold sofa. While the lightweight profile seems attractive (because it can assist with gas efficiency), the benefits don't outweigh the costs over time. Because of their light nature, the springs will compress more and more over a short amount of time and eventually will lead to a quick and critical failure of the springs. This will cause them to flatten out and create a hard and unforgiving sleeping surface.
This spring system is also found in the primary bedding components of your RV. Unless you are purchasing a quarter-million-dollar Class "A" where a higher-end mattress should come standard, your RV will feature a mattress that will break down as described above. When you have this type of critical failure you will see a decrease in functionality, springs poking through the ticking, and you will feel every single support bar in the frame of your bed, hide-a-bed, tri-fold, and fold-out. When you compare this paltry bedding to RecPro's internal fill that is composed of a gel-infused memory foam, you're looking at a night and day difference in feel, durability, and sleep/comfort compatibility. Our internal primary fill component begins with memory foam. Why is that special and what exactly is "memory foam"?
Developed in 1966 by a contractor for NASA (in an effort to improve the safety and comfort profile of aircraft support cushions), memory foam was initially called "slow spring-back foam." The foam (which became known as "temper foam") was created by introducing gas into a polymer matrix. What this creates in the foam is a solidified open-cell structure that matches the force that is applied to the body of the foam core, and then provides adequate and measured return so that the piece forms back into its original shape. So, memory foam is a space age technology that was engineered for aeronauts and astronauts that has been translated into use for the mattress industry and many have lauded it as the biggest leap forward in the market since the move from straw-stuffed mattresses on the American frontier. Its properties for bounce-back and ability to fit your exact form, and provide solid support, are why most of the industry is either moving completely to memory foam or at least incorporating the foam into the construction of their mattress lines.
Gel-infused
At RecPro we have taken the memory foam fill and improved upon it and its properties so that our customers can achieve the optimal rest state while they are out on the road. We have infused the foam component with a cooling gel composite that not only adds to the support (and softness) of the item but creates a temperature mitigating sleep support body that keeps you cool while sleeping. Temperature control has come to the forefront of customer concerns with their mattresses (especially during those warm summer months) and the industry has been scrambling to find ways to help people with heat mitigation while they sleep. Some companies add electronically-based cooling systems to their mattresses, but this adds to the cost (sometimes exorbitant amounts of money) and future maintenance costs when those systems break down. The reason this is problematic is that these mattresses depend on these cooling systems to give the customer a comfortable sleep, and not the fill or the ticking. Once the cooling system breaks down, the consumer is left with an uncomfortable mattress that leaves them sweating while they sleep. RecPro's gel-infused internal memory foam gives you the benefits of a cooling system, but with our proprietary fill that won't break down, or cost you in maintenance and electricity over time. We don't stop there, though. We considered the whole mattress when our Rec-Creation team called for a top-of-the-line sleeping application. In that, we also took a hard look at the ticking.
Bamboo Ticking
Ticking. What is it and why is it important? Well, ask yourself this: Have you ever slept on a mattress that was either itchy or caused you to overheat at night to the point that your bedclothes, blanket, and pillow were soaked with sweat? If you're like most people, the answer is yes. Either as a guest in someone's home, at a hotel, or on a mattress you purchased without testing…you've experienced the burn of bad bedding. The cause of this discomfort is bad ticking. Ticking is the outer, finished, wrap that comes on any mattress. There are many things that go into ticking and all of them make an incredible difference in whether the mattress is comfortable or a gross nightmare.
Thread count
Thread count. Does it matter? Yes, and no. While most consumers understand that a higher thread count equals a higher-quality mattress (or sheet) that doesn't always work in the real world. Just like you wouldn't buy a pot because the lid is nice, you wouldn't just buy a mattress because of the thread count. You have to look at the whole picture. With most mattresses, you have to consider whether the cotton fiber is of a higher quality, what size the yarn is (single, double, or triple-ply), and what the cotton (or fabric) is made from. There's also the fact that the fabric you’re sleeping on is chemically treated! You could be sleeping on a bed of chemicals and not even realize that you are. This seems like information that the mattress industry as a whole would give the consumer, but the manufacturers have a vested interest in keeping you uninformed. If you knew what you were truly buying, you wouldn't be so quick to purchase a majority of the bedding on the market. Their hope is that they slap the label of high thread count on their products and you'll eagerly snatch them up without asking any questions. You should.
First, you need to ask yourself what exactly does thread count (and thread composition) mean? Thread count is defined as a measure of the number of threads contained within a square inch of the mattress fabric. This includes the warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads. They're counted and this determines the "thread count". To say thread count (and composition) has no impact on comfort would be untrue. Thread count is actually the range of count you should try to stay within so that you have what feels like a comfortable and soft surface. A count of 180-400 should be your target range. Any less than 180 and you begin to see holes through your bedding (sheets) and above 400 is when you should be wary. Why? Because manufacturers tend to use multi-ply yarn (many individual threads twisted around each other) to bloat their numbers. This usually ends up in a bulkier product that feels itchy and traps heat. Also, remember, when creating more threading, the manufacturers will use a lower-quality thread material so as not to increase their costs.
So why is the ply important? Well, as stated above, when you add multiple threading that is tangled together it creates an uncomfortable sleeping surface. The fewer threads tangled together, the higher the comfort (softness, breathability, weight) profile of the mattress or sheet. So, when it comes to ply you have:
Single ply: one thread
Two-ply: two thread intertwined
Three-ply: three threads intertwined
This is why you have to be careful with a higher thread count mattress (sheet). You could purchase a 600 thread count mattress or sheet, but have 200 three-ply threads. This is not misleading on the manufacturer's part. It's a true count, from a certain point of view. They can also trick you with a single ply thread. Yes, this is the optimal thread profile, but the barrel of the single-ply thread is substantially larger than a quality thread and the thicker gauge is usually not manufactured as well so it presents with a much rougher texture. You want a fine thread with a diameter of 60 or 80 for optimal comfort. Just be wary of manufacturers that use harsh chemicals in the spinning process to create ultra-fine threading. These chemicals can make a cheap thread sturdier and it will then be able to count as a single ply thread. Yes, you're sleeping on, technically, a single-ply thread cover. But, you're also sleeping on a bed of chemicals and lies.
At RecPro our mattresses not only present with a proper thread count, but they are made of threading derived from the bamboo plant. This unique touch fabric is perfect for sleep comfort and is a natural option for a healthy and comfortable sleep. The all-natural bamboo is durable, breathable (with the proper thread count), and gives maximum comfort with an ergonomic and eco-friendly ticking. The bamboo fiber is created from bamboo pulp. This pulp is durable and retains the natural strength that comes with the bamboo plant. Because of the organic properties of the bamboo, it is naturally anti-bacterial so that smells and mold are reduced, and the transfer of illness-causing entities is diminished. The bamboo ticking also naturally wicks moisture away from the body, yet dries quickly so that there is no moisture barrier between you and your mattress. This also helps with breathability and helping to keep any bacterial growth to a minimum (this is in concert with the anti-bacterial) properties.
