Is the hood or trunk of your vehicle not staying up when it should? Got a lid that won’t stay open? Gas pressure springs, gas dampers, and gas pressure dampers are all other terms for gas struts. Our heavy-duty gas struts allow for 28 lbs. of force for each strut. We put our heavy-duty gas struts through thorough and rigorous testing, having designed and built them to meet or exceed the OEM standards for cross-functional applications. Take a look at cross-reference guides to see if our gas struts are right for you.

Our heavy-duty gas struts are designed and intended for RV, automotive, and agricultural purposes. Our heavy-duty gas struts are designed to be a solution to issues involving hatches and doors opening and closing. Using our heavy-duty gas struts provides you with controlled and measured movement when opening and closing your door, trunk, hood, or lid and has built-in damping.

Our gas struts are very easy and quick to install and offer quality and durability that can easily compete with other top brands on the market. Regardless, if you have any questions about the installation of our gas struts, consult an automotive professional.

*NOTICE – At RecPro, our heavy-duty gas struts are sold in sets. We sell our gas struts in packs because manufacturers recommend that both struts are replaced at the same time when applicable. Replacing only a single strut can cause increased stress on the other strut, leading to increased wear and tear. This increased stress can eventually lead to possible failure in the future. Make sure you observe safe working practices when installing replacement equipment on your vehicle.*

Before you start: You will first need to compare the gas strut that is already equipped on the vehicle with the gas strut you are using as a replacement. You will want to make sure that they are the same. Start by comparing the part numbers on the gas struts. Do not try to use the replacement gas strut if the two struts do not match. Each gas strut is designed for a particular purpose and vehicle. It can be hazardous to use a gas strut for a purpose it was not designed or intended for. Doing so can result in damage to your vehicle or injury to your person.

You should heavily consider having another person help you out when installing the replacement gas struts. They can hold the liftgate, hood, trunk, or lid open as you work. If your vehicle is equipped with two gas struts, a single strut will not be able to hold the hood, trunk, or lid open. A second person holding the application open will help you avoid injury or damage.

To remove the existing gas spring: Use a small flat tool such as a screwdriver to gently lift the retaining clip, which can be found on the ball socket. Do not fully remove the retaining clip, as it could fly off and cause injury, damage, or get lost. Only lift the retaining clip enough to allow the socket to be removed from the ball stud. Remove the gas strut from the ball stud. Repeat this process for the opposite end. Once more, compare the gas strut with the replacement gas strut and make sure they are the same, including the part numbers!

You may now install the replacement gas strut. Start by pushing the gas strut onto the ball studs, applying light force by hand at the ball socket. Do not use any tools, especially on the exposed black rod. Mount the gas strut in the same direction as the original: do not switch the ends while installing. Start by mounting the rod end to the hood, trunk, or lid. The tube will now be able to rotate into the correct position for attaching to the vehicle frame. Do not remove the new gas strut once it has been mounted unless it needs to be replaced. Open and close the hood, trunk, or lid to ensure it is functioning properly.
